The decline of platinum age comicbooks. What were they thinking?

In the beginning there were big sized books printed in full color, one-sided but quality paper. Then competition started between publishers. The cheaper publisber used lower quality paper (Leon & Cupples vs Stokes). Then the US got involved in some stupid war overseas. Bud Fisher complaints about the poor quality paper in his fifth Mutt and Jeff book (in the trenches). The first bringing up father book (1917) also was printed on poor paper. However not only the paper quality was low also the lay out was crappy. We show you the book of The Newlyweds by McManus published by Saalfield in 1917. What were they thinking??
